Welcome to the Department of Foods and Nutrition at the University of Georgia. We are a developing department with special strengths in human and biochemical nutrition; obesity and diabetes; nutrition and bone health; dietetics and food quality and safety . Our award winning faculty come from diverse backgrounds. Their graduate and postdoctoral training institutes include: University of California Berkeley and Davis, University of Wisconsin, Penn State University, Harvard, University of Massachusetts, Cornell University, University of Florida, Rutgers University, Purdue University, University of Cincinnati, Utah State University, Iowa State University, University of Tennessee and Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University.
Undergraduate Majors We have three major programs: dietetics, consumer foods and nutrition science offered to meet diverse career interests:
- The Dietetics major is the first step to becoming a registered dietitian. Registered dietitians find careers in food companies, hospitals, public health, extension, government, wellness programs, and education. Registered dietitians often work with physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and food service workers to provide appropriate nutrition to people in hospitals and nursing homes.
- Consumer Foods. Careers include communicating food and nutrition information to the public through TV or radio or by writing articles for newspapers, magazines, or extension bulletins. Graduates might also work in public relations to answer consumers' questions on the nutrition and safety of the foods they buy. Food industry careers in the areas of sensory analysis, recipe testing, and development of new foods containing sugar or fat substitutes are available for graduates of this major.
- The Nutrition Science major is designed for the science-oriented student. This major provides an excellent background for entry into medical, dental, pharmacy, veterinary school, or other graduate programs in the biological and health sciences. Most students do a one year research project with a faculty member.
Graduate Program:
Masters of Science and Ph.D. degrees are offered. The program is well represented at national meetings and graduates are placed in research positions with universities, medical schools, federal laboratories, and industry. Our strength is in the basic science of nutrition in which we emphasize: 1) the diversity in the human needs for food and nutrients, 2) the metabolic responses to dietary change, and 3) the interacting effects of genetics and nutrients, as well as the food consumption patterns on human health.
Do Your Students Receive Awards?
Since 1990, our students have received over 100 scholarships, awards, and honors. The most prestigious awards include the American Institute of Nutrition Graduate Student Research Award, USDA National Needs Fellowships for Graduate Students, American Dietetic Association Graduate Student Research Award, Georgia Young Dietitian of the Year Award, the International Life Sciences Institute Nutrition and Aging Award, and the Robert C. Anderson Award for Outstanding Ph.D. Graduate Student of the University of Georgia. You will automatically be considered for our Department, College, and Graduate School awards and scholarships during the application and admission process. Students with high academic achievement and exemplary professional and volunteer experiences receive priority for these awards.
Do Your Students Attend Professional Meetings?
Our graduate students are very active professionally and many receive funding to attend local, state, and national meetings. During the past few years graduate students presented papers at the national annual meetings of the American Dietetic Association, Society for Nutrition Education, American Society for Nutritional Sciences, Institute of Food Technologists, American College of Sports Medicine, American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, North American Society for Obesity, Neuroscience and Society for the Study of Ingestive Behaviors, Gerontological Society of America, and FASEB Summer Conferences.
