Assistant Professor In Consumer Economics

Position:  ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN CONSUMER ECONOMICS with an emphasis in family financial management, Twelve-month academic appointment, tenure-track.  Position begins August 17, 2009 or as negotiated.

Qualifications:  Ph.D. in family financial management, personal financial planning, or family economics, consumer economics or closely related discipline with a specialization in financial planning.  At least one degree in an area of Family and Consumer Sciences is preferred. CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM designation or desire to receive certification; demonstrated potential for outstanding achievement, scholarly competence, and research productivity; successful college teaching experience; and active membership in relevant professional organizations are preferred.

Responsibilities:  Work with faculty and staff to build a new undergraduate program in Consumer Economics with an emphasis in family financial planning at the Griffin campus of the University of Georgia and provide academic mentoring and career guidance to students.  Teach undergraduate courses on the Griffin campus.  Advise undergraduate students; direct graduate student research; collaborate with colleagues; and show productivity in research.  Obtain external funding to support scholarly activity.  Provide service to professional organizations, the department, the college, and the university.  Build and maintain a relationship with the Griffin/Atlanta financial planning community.

Salary:  Competitive; commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Department:  The Department offers Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Ph.D. programs.  There are 18 faculty members in the department engaged in teaching, research and outreach/extension, approximately 450 undergraduate students, and 23 graduate students.  The department’s Housing and Demographics Research Center is a member of the National Consortium of University-based Housing Research Centers, designated by the National Association of Home Builders’ Research Center.

The College:   The Department of Housing and Consumer Economics is one of four departments in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences.  The other departments are Child and Family Development; Foods and Nutrition; and Textiles, Merchandising and Interiors. The Griffin Campus:  The University of Georgia-Griffin Campus is located 40 miles from downtown Atlanta and 35 miles south of the Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.  Undergraduate programs were first offered on the Griffin campus in fall 2005.  Approximately 50 students are enrolled in degree programs in biological science, environmental resource management, consumer economics, and agribusiness.  Graduate programs in education are part of the new initiatives at the Griffin campus.

The University: The University of Georgia, the oldest state-chartered university in the United States, is a research and land-grant university with 15 colleges and schools enrolling over 32,000 students, about 6,500 of whom are graduate students. 

The Community: Griffin-Spalding County is located in the west-central part of Georgia, 40 miles south of downtown Atlanta and 55 miles northwest of Macon.  As part of the Atlanta SMSA, it has a population of 58,000.  Most of the students working on degrees at the Griffin campus complete the first two years of their program at nearby Gordon College, located in Barnesville, Georgia.
